Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common entrance examination which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission in various engineering courses like B.Tech, B.E, B.Arch and B.Planning under the direction of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

In 2012, CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) announced this common examination in place of AIEEE and IIT-JEE. JEE is being conducted into two parts, JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). In September 2013, the IIT Council approved the decision of the Joint Admission Board to continue with the two-phase JEE pattern (Mains followed by Advanced) for IITs in 2014.

JEE (Main)

What Is JEE Main?

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is a national-level engineering entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is one of the most important entrance exams for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate engineering programmes in India.

JEE Main serves as the entrance examination for admission to institutions such as the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other participating technical institutions. It is also the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced, which offers eligible candidates a pathway to admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Students planning to pursue engineering after Class 12 should understand the JEE Main syllabus, eligibility criteria, examination pattern, registration process and preparation strategy well in advance.

JEE Main Exam Pattern

JEE Main consists of different papers for engineering, architecture and planning programmes.

  • Paper 1 – B.E./B.Tech.: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Paper 2A – B.Arch.: Mathematics, Aptitude Test and Drawing Test.
  • Paper 2B – B.Planning: Mathematics, Aptitude Test and Planning-based questions.

Paper 1 is conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode. The question pattern, marking scheme and detailed syllabus are published by NTA in the official information bulletin for each examination cycle.

For engineering aspirants, preparation focuses on conceptual understanding, numerical problem-solving, application of formulas, accuracy and effective time management across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

Students should check the latest official information bulletin for the eligibility conditions applicable to their examination year.

In general, candidates must meet the prescribed requirements relating to their qualifying examination, subjects studied, year of passing or appearing, and other applicable conditions. Admission to individual institutions may have additional eligibility requirements.

Candidates aspiring to join the IITs must also satisfy the separate JEE Advanced eligibility criteria and applicable admission requirements.

JEE Main Examination Timeline

JEE Main is generally conducted in two sessions, commonly scheduled around January and April. Candidates should consult the official notification for the applicable registration windows, eligibility requirements and examination schedule.

What Is the Difference Between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

JEE Main and JEE Advanced serve different purposes in the engineering admission process.

JEE Main is used for admission to NITs, IIITs and other participating institutions. It also serves as the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced is the entrance examination for undergraduate programmes at the IITs. Only candidates who meet the applicable shortlisting and eligibility criteria can appear for it.

What Is JEE Advanced?

JEE Advanced (Joint Entrance Examination Advanced) is a national-level entrance examination for admission to undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Candidates must qualify through JEE Main and satisfy the prescribed eligibility criteria to appear for JEE Advanced. The examination tests conceptual understanding, analytical thinking and advanced problem-solving skills in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

JEE Advanced is generally conducted once a year, around May or June.

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Papers: Two compulsory papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, conducted on the same day.
  • Mode: Computer-based examination.
  • Question types and marking scheme: May vary between examination years.

JEE Advanced Eligibility

Candidates must meet the prescribed JEE Main shortlisting criteria and other eligibility requirements, including applicable age limits, attempt restrictions and Class 12 qualifying examination conditions.
