JEE Main vs. JEE Advanced: what's the difference?

1. Purpose and Eligibility of Examination

  • JEE Main: Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), it is the first step for BE/B.Tech admissions in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Students can attempt it for three consecutive years, and there is no minimum percentage requirement in Class 12 to appear for the exam.
  • JEE Advanced: Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main are shortlisted to take the JEE Advanced exam, which is organized by one of the IITs each year. Candidates can qualify if they score 75% marks in Class 12 exams or by ranking in the top 20 percentile of their respective education boards.

2. Exam Pattern and Difficulty Level

  • JEE Main: JEE Main mainly have two papers, paper 1 is focused for B.E or B.Tech courses, whereas Paper 2 caters to those interested in B.Arch or B.Planning programs. It contains moderately tough questions, evaluating basic concepts.
  • JEE Advanced: Considered extremely difficult, it encompasses intricate problem-solving, multiple correct responses, and paragraph-based questions.

3. Syllabus and Scheme of Marking

  • JEE Main: Includes Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics of Class 11 and 12 NCERT syllabus with an equal number of questions.
  • JEE Advanced: JEE Advanced extends beyond the NCERT syllabus, concentrating highly on in-depth concepts and complex analytical questions
  • Negative marking is stricter.
