JOINT ENTRANCE EXAMINATION (JEE)
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common entrance examination which is conducted for admission in various engineering courses like B.Tech, B.E, B.Arch and B.Planning under the direction of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
In 2012, CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) announced this common examination in place of AIEEE and IIT-JEE. JEE is being conducted into two parts, JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). In September 2013, the IIT Council approved the decision of the Joint Admission Board to continue with the two-phase JEE pattern (Mains followed by Advanced) for IITs in 2014.
JEE (Main)
Till 2017, the JEE (Main) has been the admission criteria to Undergraduate Engineering Programs at NITs, IIITs, Other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions, Institutions funded by participating State Governments, and other institutions.
The All India Council for Technical Education has mandated that all technical institutes across India will have to, from 2018, accept the JEE Main scores for admission to all undergraduate engineering and architecture courses. Hence, from 2018 onwards, JEE (Main) will be the single common entrance exam. Institutes will have the autonomy to give weightage to Grade 12 marks. It is also possible that the JEE (Main) may be held several times in a year.
The Paper-1 of JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs.
JEE (Advanced)
JEE (Advanced) www.jeeadv.ac.in is conducted for as the only entrance exam for all 23 IITs including ISM Dhanbad. Only the top 224,000 candidates (across all categories), based on their scores in Paper-1 of JEE (Main),are eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced). JEE (Main) is conducted by CBSE during the month of May every year. Additionally, the candidates should satisfy at least one of the following two criteria for admission to IITs and ISM:
  • Must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the class XII (or equivalent) Board examination. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PwD candidates should be at least 70%
  • Must be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination
Students need to sit 2 exams of 3 hours each, MCQ style, in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics:
  • Paper 1 is scheduled from 9 am to 12 pm
  • Paper 2 is scheduled from 2 pm to 5 pm.
A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times and that too, in consecutive years. However, being in the top 224,000 in JEE (Main) is the prime eligibility criterion applicable to all irrespective of the attempt number.

COMPENDIUM OF ENGINEERING DISCIPLINES
This is a compilation of information on various engineering streams and disciplines by Aryan Malik, a student of Dubai College. He embarked on this compilation to gain some degree of insight and information to some of the options within the vast and evolving field of engineering sciences. We believe that this could be useful to several other students as well, and have, with his permission, made it available publically.
This has been based on information available on various websites, such as the renowned Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NIT) as well as some international colleges such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of California, Berkeley, University of Maryland, Wikipedia, etc. It may be noted that many colleges offer newer courses that are inter-disciplinary and the traditional categorisations may not hold true. Conversely, not all options presented herein may be offered by all colleges.
Please do bear in mind that there is some possibility of factual inaccuracies, being sourced from various websites.
We at ASCENTRIA are thankful to Aryan for this contribution, as well as for organising the Career Awareness Sessions which many of our students have actively participated in.
